All foods are meant for the belly but there are certainly some categories of food that any pregnant woman who decides to have a safe delivery of the baby, without any deformity must avoid.  Alternatively, if these foods are consumed during the period of pregnancy, it could harm the baby.

1. Avoid Raw Eggs

Every pregnant woman should avoid raw eggs or even partially cooked eggs. It is important that any eggs consumed should be thoroughly cooked until the whites and yolks are solid.

This prevents the risk of salmonella food poisoning. It is advised that eggs consumed should be homemade or by a loved one who is aware that raw eggs or partially cooked eggs are harmful to pregnant women.

2. Avoid Cheese

Cheese is a very good source of food no doubt like Camembert, mold-ripened soft cheese but there are some types of cheese that are not safe for any woman especially in her period of pregnancy because they contain listeria.

A good example of a cheese that contains listeria bacteria is soft blue-veined cheese which is often referred to as Danish blue. Danish blue cheese is made up of listeria bacteria which causes harm, especially to an unborn baby.

Although certain food scientists have argued that listeriotic infection, an infection caused by listeria bacteria rarely affects the baby but it is better to take precautions and avoid these categories of cheese, especially during pregnancy.

The significance of taking precautions is due to the fact that any state of bad health or disease in the mother can lead to abnormalities during delivery or miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe illness in a newborn baby.

3. Avoid Raw Uncooked Meat

Meat and poultry should be cooked properly such that it is not undercooked but it should be thoroughly cooked such that there is no traced blood.

It should also be taken to notice that pregnant women should be more careful when it comes to minced meat and sausages that is why it is advised to eat other beef provided it is carefully cooked and properly sealed for usages.

4. Avoid Excessive Vitamin A

Foods that contain vitamin A such as liver products should be avoided because Liver products contain a lot of vitamin A. Despite the fact that vitamin A is a requirement in the body but excessive vitamin A can harm the baby.

Even Supplements containing vitamin A should be avoided during the period of pregnancy. Especially high-dose multivitamin supplements that have excessive Vitamins such as fish liver oil supplements or any supplements containing vitamin A should be avoided during the period of pregnancy.

5. Avoid Certain Categories Of Fish

As a pregnant woman, you should be careful of certain types of fish you consume. Remember your baby’s life depend solely on what you eat, you shouldn’t consume fishes such as swordfish, shark, marlin, and a minimum amount of tuna.

It is achievable to eat not more than two (2) tuna steaks in a week statically it is (about 140g cooked or 170g raw each) or four medium-sized cans of tuna a week which is (about 140g when drained).

These categories of fish contain high levels of mercury; it has recently been discovered that high levels of mercury could cause damage to a baby’s developing nervous system.

It is recommended that any pregnant woman should eat at least not more than two portions of oily fish per week. Remember Oily fish is fresh tuna not just canned tuna but also salmon, mackerel, sardines, and trout.

Conclusively, even raw shellfish should be avoided as it contains harmful bacteria and viruses causing food poisoning.
