Onion is a member of the Allium genus of the flowering plants and some other crops in this family includes garlic, leeks, shallots, etc.

Everyone has onions in their houses but only a handful of people know that onions serve more than just spicing up the food we eat.

In this article, we will be looking at the health benefits of Onions that have not been known by a lot of people. Onions contain a lot of vitamins and minerals that are very beneficial to the body.

Long before the potency of onions was verified, onions have been used to treat various health challenges including heart attacks but since the introduction of chemical drugs, onions and other natural vegetables have been neglected.

There are three types of onions in the world at large which are; red onions, yellow onions, and white onions. Onions are very nutritious. They contain lots of nutrients which include Vitamin C, sulphuric compounds, flavonoids, and phytochemicals.

It is very important to note that the reason why you shed tears when you cut into onions is that when you cut an onion, the onion will naturally produce a Sulphur based gas (acid) that reacts with the water in the eyes.

Immediately this is done, the tears duct gets to work and produces enough tears to wash off the gas from the eyes in the form of tears.

It is advised that before cutting an onion ball, you should put the onion in the fridge for about thirty minutes or better still when cutting the onion, you should take it farther a bit from your eyes so that the emitted gas disperses before it reaches your eyes.

Onion has in it a flavonoid called ‘Quercetin’. Quercetin acts as an antioxidant that can be connected to the prevention of diseases like cancer and other heart issues.

It also reduces the symptoms of bladder infection, thereby promoting prostate health and reducing blood pressure. Another important benefit of quercetin is that it relaxes the airway muscles, therefore, it may help in the relief of asthma.

As a result of a fiber that is present in onion called ‘oligofructose’, onion aids greatly in the digestion of foods consumed in the body.

The fiber also helps in the promotion of the growth of good fiber in the body and it also helps in the prevention of diarrhea.

According to the National Onions Association, a ball of onion possesses some phytochemicals which help greatly in hunting down free radicals in the body, hence reducing the risk of contracting or developing a gastric ulcer.

It is not only the phytochemicals that help fight off the free radicals in the body, onions possess some polyphenols which also help to protect the body against some free radicals.

The act of hunting down these free radicals by the polyphenols which act as an antioxidant helps to maintain a strong immune system that can fight off foreign contamination.

Women who are going through or having menopause should endeavor to eat as many onions as possible as it helps them to have a lower risk of hips fracture than those who do not eat it by improving their bone density.

It is advised however that onions should be eaten at their raw state for better impact on the body system since it is more nutritious to the body raw.

This does not condemn the cooked one, it’s just that when an onion is eaten in its raw state, it has a higher level of an organic sulfur compound which constitutes a part of what the body needs on a daily basis.
