Most women experience a kind of burning sensation around the area of their vagina either during or after sex. This burning usually makes them quite uneasy as sometimes it feels as though a peppery substance has just been poured into the vagina.

In this article, we will look at some possible causes of Vaginal infection among women. Because of the fragility of the vagina, a lot of things usually causes this burning, and some of them are;

Bacterial Vaginosis

This is a condition that happens when there are excess bacteria in and around the vagina region thus causing an abnormal imbalance in the vaginal area. Between the ages of 15 to 44, most women are more likely to be infected with Bacterial Vaginosis.

One way you can know that you have been infected with Bacterial Vaginosis is the burning sensation in the vagina and this can also happen when the infected person is urinating.

In its normal state, BV does not usually cause symptoms but when it does, it can also include white or gray discharge from the vagina, a strong odor that often smells like fish, especially after sexual intercourse, etc.

Someone infected with BV is more likely to be infected with an STD. The treatment for BV is usually done with some antibiotics.

This is a kind of infection that is often caused by a bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhea. The bacteria infects the mucous membranes such as the fallopian tubes, uterus, and cervix. The primary way that Gonorrhea is transmitted is through sexual relations with an affected person.

This Sexually Transmitted Disease is more common in people between the ages of 15 to 24. When the disease is present in a woman, she can experience severe burning when she is urinating as well as some of these other symptoms; discharge from the vagina, and bleeding between periods.

For Gonorrhea to be treated effectively, it sometimes requires the patient to take two different types of drugs simultaneously.

Yeast Infection

when there is an infection in the vagina that is caused by Yeast, it has the potential to lead to a burning sensation. The general name for this is candidiasis or thrush.

Some of the symptoms that come along with this include pain during sex, vaginal discharge, itching, and soreness. Yeast infections can be treated by taking oral medication or rubbing a cream around the area of the vagina.

when the vagina comes in contact with certain things, irritation would most likely occur and this is what is known as dermatitis.

Some of the things that can cause this irritation include soaps, perfumes, and fabrics which may lead to rawness, pain, stinging, or severe itching.

Basically, the only form of treatment for dermatitis is to avoid contact with whatever is causing the irritation in the first place.


This is associated with the bacteria known as Chlamydia trachomatis which is basically passed from one person to another during sexual relations with one who has been infected already. It is often treated using antibiotics such as azithromycin and doxycycline.

Other causes of burning in the vagina include; Menopause, Urinary tract infection, Trichomoniasis, Genital herpes, and genital contact allergies amongst others
