Motor licensing or plate number registration is done at the state level in Nigeria. That means that to have a Lagos based number, you need to apply for the license in Lagos. The same applies to other states including Abuja.

Before you go to register your car, so make sure to be in possession of a valid driver’s license. In Nigeria, the driver’s license is issued by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). It takes about 60 days to be ready.

How to Register a New Car in Nigeria

To register your new car in Nigeria, you need to present the following documents:

  1. Purchase receipt
  2. Letter of attestation from the company of purchase
  3. Delivery note from the seller
  4. Other documents to prove ownership
  5. A valid driver’s license
  6. National identity card or international passport (for identification)
  7. Proof of current address (your power bill will do)
  8. Your passport photograph

If you imported your car, you will be required to present the following too:

  1. Customs papers (to prove that customs has cleared the car)
  2. Tax identification number (NIN)
  3. Motor vehicle duty certificate
