A fortnight ago, Mr. Ayobami was returning from his business meeting which ended a day earlier than he had told his wife it would.

He wanted to surprise his wife and was excited to return to her and his adorable kids who he had so missed the past week. He stopped at the nearest supermarket and got presents for his wife and kids.

On arrival, he met the door unbolted and the house was so quiet. It almost freaked him out when he remembered it was a Friday evening and his mother-in-law may have come to take the kids for the weekend as she often does.

So he crept in noiselessly and there were his wife and best friend Tunde; eyes shut and lost in a hot lovemaking session. A furious Mr. Ayobami got into a fistfight with Tunde, he rained punches on his unprepared combatant and pushed him so hard that he fell and hit his head on the tiled floor.

A whimper escaped Tunde’s lips as he landed on the glittering tiled floor and went coldly silent. Moments later when Tunde was confirmed dead, a remorseful Ayobami said he did not mean to kill his friend but he was arraigned in court for committing manslaughter.

Manslaughter is an unlawful killing that does not involve malice aforethought, that is, an intention to seriously harm or kill, or extreme, reckless disregard for life.

Man is an emotional being and he is prone to violence because of the degree to which emotions can boil when angered or provoked.

Since provocations are inevitable because we cannot control people’s actions, we must know that we can control our reactions to other people’s actions. Bearing this in mind will greatly reduce violence in our country.
