Functions of Nigerian Meteorological Agency

The government agency known as Nigerian Meteorological Agency came into existence by an Act of the National Assembly – NIMET (Establishment) ACT 2003, enacted on 21st May 2003, and which became functional on 19th June 2003 following Presidential assent.

Major Functions of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency

1. Advising The Federal Government

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency is a Federal Government agency saddled with the task of advising the Federal Government on all aspects of meteorology.

It also helps to project, prepare, interpret, and document government policy in the field of meteorology; and to issue weather (and climate) forecasts for the safe operations of aircraft, ocean-going vessels, and oil rigs.

2. Computation and Interpretation of Data to Aid Good Policy Making

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency also has the responsibility of collating, collecting, processing, and disseminating all meteorological data and information within and outside Nigeria to aid good policy and decision-making.

3. Assistance In The Field Of Aviation

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency provides weather forecasts and reports for the safe operation of flights. Some of these services include:

  1. Terminal Aerodrome
  2. Enroute and Destination Weather Forecasts & Trends;
  3. Briefing the Pilots & Airmen on expected weather at various points
  4. Provision of round-the-clock weather reports of points of departure, en route, and destination by radio transmission.

Significant Weather Reports– which is a very vital tool for flight routing during movement, etc.

4. Informing The Common Citizens

It has been a great duty of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to update the common Nigerian citizens on weather forecasts and predictions.

This goes a long way to aid some decision-making, reducing serious cases of accidents due to weather-related mishaps.

Also, it guides the citizens on flight bookings and other related matters.

5. Extension And General Assistance To Other Sectors

Nigerian Meteorological Agency also provides services and products (such as Seasonal Rainfall Prediction, Quarterly & Annual Weather, Agromet Bulletin, Hydromet Bulletin, etc.
