The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) was established by the Act of Parliament No. 48, to resume operations on 29th May 1999, as a body saddled with perpetual succession and a common seal; that may sue or be sued in its corporate name and shall own, hold or dispose of property (be it movable or immovable).

The agency has a governing board headed by a part-time chairman who is being appointed by the president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the federal republic of Nigeria for a term of four years.

The Functions of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency are synonymous with functions of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC),

The National Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) ensures safety and makes adequate provisions for air traffic services in Nigeria.

The Functions of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency are as follows:  

1. Communication With Aircrafts

NAMA is an air navigation service provider saddled with the task of providing radio communication with every flying Nigerian aircraft in the airspace.

This communication helps to get updated with the traveling conditions and at least render assistance in cases of emergency.

2. Proper Documentation Of Aircraft Related Cases

Its statutory function is to give an account of its services to the accident aircraft prior to the occurrence of such.  Information of this nature is very helpful in ascertaining preventive or corrective measures to be adopted in the future, in cases of such emergencies.

3. Provision Of Adequate Air Traffic Services

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency has over the years made provisions for air traffic services in Nigeria. Apart from air traffic services, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency is also into air traffic control providing visual, as well as, non-visual aids, and also aeronautical telecommunication services.

4. Provision Of Aerodromes In Nigerian Airports

Another function of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency is the provision of aerodromes at major airports across Nigeria. They ensure facilities are put in place for proper takeoff and landing of aircraft.

5. Provision Of Conducive Atmosphere For Air Travels

They also provide services such as electricity supplies in order to enable public, private transport, and, that business and military airplanes to fly conveniently.

They also ensure the practicable provision of services that would guarantee the safety of business operations within its powers.

6. Creation Of An Interface Between Nigeria And The International Community

Through forum meetings and other forms of international collaborations, NAMA being an Air Navigation Service Provider has tried to manage the Nigerian Airspace to a level consistent with the requirements of the ICAO SARPs and to make it rank among the safest in the AFI region indeed, and the world at large.

7. Regulation And Standardization Of Aviation Practices In Nigeria

In line with NAMA’s responsibility for ensuring safety in aviation, the regulation and standardization of aviation practices are very sacrosanct towards ensuring this and this has been a core concern to NAMA over the years.

It ensures that standard equipment is available and used for travel, to reduce the rate of air accidents. Also, it serves as a platform for licensing private practices in aviation to ensure compliance with standards.
