The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) began its full operation in the year 2001 despite being established by the federal government as far back as the 3rd of August, 1995 by virtue of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act of 1995.

The establishment of the authority was for the authority to bear the responsibility of the safety of nuclear and radiological protection within Nigeria.

The NNRA is also in charge of giving licenses, inspecting, and making sure that nuclear safety and radiological protection are enforced in all the practices of the country.

Based on its functionality, the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority deals with a wide range of persons cutting across the general public, radiation service providers, and radiation employers.

The radiation employers come from the following major parts of the economy which include; Health Industry, Petroleum Industry, Manufacturing Industry, Mining Industry, Education and research institute, Agricultural and Water resources institute, and nuclear installations.

The mandate of the NNRA hence is to become an authority that regulates radiological protection as well as nuclear safety so that the lives and properties of people, as well as the environment concerned in the sector, are protected from the negative effect of ionizing radiation, security, and safety of radioactive sources and nuclear materials and at the same time, to help the country to reach the international standard when it comes to the use of nuclear technology peacefully.

The NNRA’s vision on the other side is to put in place the best regulatory control regime for all activities that involve ionizing radiation as well as nuclear energy.

8. They meet with relevant stakeholders when they want to establish priorities, develop policies, or plan their specific services and programs
9. They communicate and interact freely with foreign and international nuclear regulators as well as appropriate national and international organizations and they also cooperate with their jurisdiction; and
10. They also operate in both an effective and efficient manner.
