Below are examples of common errors associated with the word Convocation:

  1. Please I am convocating tomorrow, you’re invited
  2. I’ll be convocating next week
  3. Are you also convocating tomorrow
  4. We are convoking today
  5. Tomorrow is my convocation

The above examples are all wrong and we shall find out why they are wrong as we progress.

The prime purpose of this article is to help correct some Nigerian graduands and others who may not know that the above examples are all grammatically and contextually wrong.

Although semantically, the listener might understand what the speaker is saying, there is a serious need as to why University graduates should prove themselves truly learned or educated.

Definitions:

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines convocation thus:

  1. A meeting of the members of a college or university to observe a particular ceremony (such as the beginning of the school year or the announcing of awards and honors).
  2. The act of calling a group of people to a formal meeting.
  3. An assembly of persons convoked

Examples from Merriam-Webster:

  1. They called for the immediate convocation of the council
  2. The first speaker to address the convocation

Synonymous words from Merriam-Webster: assemblage, assembly, gathering, ingathering, meeting, conference, congregation, muster.

At the end of the students’ University Programme, the school convokes or assembles all the graduands together in a formal gathering called Convocation in order to officially issue them their deserving Degree in paper form having completed the necessary requirements for the award of the Degree in accordance with their areas of the discipline.

Worthy of note is the fact that it is the University that convokes the graduands and not the graduands themselves as graduands cannot convoke and award themselves Degrees. Therefore, the above examples usually used by most people are not grammatically and contextually correct.

Below are unequivocal explications:

I am convoking tomorrow – wrong

I’ll convoke tomorrow – wrong

I’m convocating tomorrow – wrong

Tomorrow is convocation at University of Uyo – correct

All the graduands shall be convoked tomorrow – correct

The school shall convoke graduands tomorrow – correct

I am one of the graduands to be convoked tomorrow – correct

There are no such words as convocate and convocating in English and so, the related words to them are, convoke and convoking respectively but one must be cautious as to how and where to use them to avoid blunders.

You cannot say my convocation since you are not the convocator.

The word convoke is a transitive verb and must take an object.

A transitive verb is a verb that requires one or more objects. This contrasts with intransitive verbs, which do not have objects.

The person or school who calls for convocation is the convocator and not convocant.

The adjectival forms of convocation are convocative or convocational.
