Your business name is what you wish that people will call your business and as such, you need to be careful to choose the right one. After choosing it, it is expected that you get it registered.
Registering your business name gives you the privilege of having your name secured. When you register your business name, it prevents other persons from using that same name to operate any kind of business. This is to avoid collision and confusion between business owners in the country.
The organization responsible for registering business names in Nigeria is called The Corporate Affairs Commission. They have their corporate headquarters situated at Plot 420, Tigris Crescent off Aguiyi Ironsi Street Maitama, Abuja.

You can register your business name in two ways either by yourself or employ the service of a legal person. If you opt for hiring the service of a legal person, it will be an extra cost and the process will still be the same only that you don’t have to be there to go through the stress.
How to Register a Company Name with CAC
1. Log on to their website on services.cac.gov.ng or cac.gov.ng and create an account
Should your account creation become successful, you’ll become an accredited customer and your username and password will be mailed to the email address you provided during registration. After registration, enter the username and password and click on Login. It is after the registration that you can proceed to register your business name.

2. Check to see if your business name is available
You can easily do this by clicking on Name Search and completing the displayed forms, keep clicking on the continue button until you complete the form and make payment.
3. If Your desired business name is available, select Registration
And choose the classification then you enter the availability serial number you were provided with while searching for the name availability. Enter the details of the business owner and other valid information as would be required on the site and submit.
4. You will be required to upload some source documents depending on the kind of business you want to be involved in
For clarity purposes, all your uploaded files should be clear and readable because any document that is not clear will not be regarded as valid.

5. Fill in your state of origin
As you fill in, you will be expected to fill in the state of residence so that when the certificate of incorporation is available, it will be mailed to your state of residence.
